Santa Barbara local Frankie Hill was known for his "go for it" attitude, especially when filming videos. He was featured in Public Domain, but Ban This features his breakout part, one minute and 38 seconds of what many today consider proof of Hill's pioneering stunt work at big rails and huge gaps. After Ban This, Hill received bags of fan mail asking when he's going to turn pro.
The timing was good, too, as a spot opened up with Mike Vallely's departure. Hill started riding Vallely's shape, modified with a bigger nose, and on a vacation with Hastings, he poached a bulldog logo from an Amsterdam coffee shop and made it his first pro graphic.
It was illustrated by Sean Cliver in 1990.

In 1987 street skating was rapidly gaining popularity. Steve Caballero not only excelled at vert skating but was a top contender on the "Street-Style" circuit. Powell-Peralta decided to introduce an additional Cab deck model specifically designed for street. Artist V.C. Johnson created a new dragon graphic with a bats & bones background. Cab's name was also created in the bat shape since Cab was into Batman at the time. The Powell-Peralta logo was made using the Animal Chin font, also a sign of the times.

In the late 1980's, Powell Peralta had an established vert team that was maxed out with the likes of Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill and Lance Mountain. In an effort to expand the companies pro roster to include the growing "Street-Style" market, they began adding new "street" pros. After Tommy Guerrero it was Mike Vallely, then Ray Barbee. The fourth Powell-Peralta Street pro to receive a deck model was Long Beach local, Steve Saiz. His Native American "totem pole" graphic was the second illustrated by newly acquired artist Sean Cliver in 1989. Saiz continued to skate for Powell-Peralta into the early 1990's until his knee unfortunately gave out.

In early 1985, Ray Underhill packed up his gear and drove his Ford hatchback from Gallatin, Tennessee to California to pursue his dreams of making it big in skateboarding. Soon after his arrival, Powell Peralta recognized his talent and welcomed him as an amateur on the legendary Bones Brigade team. Ray’s patience and dedication paid off when Powell Peralta released his first pro model - Chain and Cross in 1990. Known for his smooth style and deep bag of tricks, Ray brought a unique talent and grace to the vert scene of the late 1980’s, making friends everywhere he went.
The changing skate culture of the early 1990’s refocused skateboarding on street skating, and by the mid 1990’s, vert skating and its heroes were out of fashion. Ray’s exceptional personality, skills and friendships enabled him to transition into the supply side of the skate industry, applying his artistic expertise, work ethic, and signature kindness to create a second successful career.
In 2008, Ray passed away after a battle with a brain tumor, but his talent, humor, and loving spirit left an enduring mark on skateboarding. To honor his legacy and family, we’re proud to release his iconic blunt-nosed Chain and Cross pro model in this gold foil rendition.
