Santa Barbara local Frankie Hill was known for his "go for it" attitude, especially when filming videos. He was featured in Public Domain, but Ban This features his breakout part, one minute and 38 seconds of what many today consider proof of Hill's pioneering stunt work at big rails and huge gaps. After Ban This, Hill received bags of fan mail asking when he's going to turn pro.
The timing was good, too, as a spot opened up with Mike Vallely's departure. Hill started riding Vallely's shape, modified with a bigger nose, and on a vacation with Hastings, he poached a bulldog logo from an Amsterdam coffee shop and made it his first pro graphic.
It was illustrated by Sean Cliver in 1990.

Powell Peralta Geegah Skull & Sword - Green Foil Deck
Regular price $239.90 Save $-239.90In 1986 jump ramps were all the rage. Easy to build, portable and fun to launch off of. Unfortunately, decks were snapping left and right. Powell-Peralta deck returns were so high the company sought ways to make decks stronger and more resistant to jump breaks. One solution was Bonite construction. Another was the "Gee-Gaw" shape which had bumps to reinforce the break zone area. Why "Gee-Gaw?" Ask Chris Iverson. This shape was also used for the Ripper graphic. They were produced between 1987 and 1988.
About the art:
The Rodriguez "Skull & Sword" deck was the first pro signature deck graphic produced by Powell-Peralta. The graphic was conceived by Ray and Illustrated by V.C. Johnson with art direction from George Powell in 1979
Features:
• long 4 - 2.5" old school truck hole pattern
• Made in Mexico

In 1987 street skating was rapidly gaining popularity. Steve Caballero not only excelled at vert skating but was a top contender on the "Street-Style" circuit. Powell-Peralta decided to introduce an additional Cab deck model specifically designed for street. Artist V.C. Johnson created a new dragon graphic with a bats & bones background. Cab's name was also created in the bat shape since Cab was into Batman at the time. The Powell-Peralta logo was made using the Animal Chin font, also a sign of the times.

Regular price $259.90 Save $-259.90LONG 4 - 2.5" OLD SCHOOL TRUCK HOLE PATTERN
After a six year run, it was time to change up Caballero's deck graphic. Just in time for the filming of the Animal Chin video in 1986, a new dragon graphic was created for Cab. Now known as the Cab Chinese Dragon, the artwork was inspired by a Chinese takeout box and finally illustrated by VCJ. The Chinese Dragon came on a new "fish" shape in full size and mini. It was produced as 7-ply maple and also "Bonite" construction. It was discontinued in 1987.

In the late 1980's, Powell Peralta had an established vert team that was maxed out with the likes of Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Mike McGill and Lance Mountain. In an effort to expand the companies pro roster to include the growing "Street-Style" market, they began adding new "street" pros. After Tommy Guerrero it was Mike Vallely, then Ray Barbee. The fourth Powell-Peralta Street pro to receive a deck model was Long Beach local, Steve Saiz. His Native American "totem pole" graphic was the second illustrated by newly acquired artist Sean Cliver in 1989. Saiz continued to skate for Powell-Peralta into the early 1990's until his knee unfortunately gave out.
